"Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude, except as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duty convicted, shall exist within the United States, or any place subject to their jurisdiction."
This amendment freed slaves in areas outside of Union control. President Abraham Lincoln passed this amendment, because during the Cival War that lasted from 1861-1865, the Northeners were battling against the Southerners, and the Northeners were fighting against what they saw as a clash to end slavery
